Abstract
Malignant brain tumors frequently recur at the site of the initial presentation. In recent years a number of innovative local treatments have been developed to achieve a more effective growth control. Among these, the Giadel® interstitial chemotherapy wafers and the GliaSite® Radiation Therapy System (RTS) have been the most extensively used in clinical settings with patients affected by malignant brain tumors. We present our experience with the use of these systems accumulated over the years. Both systems are now routinely employed in selected patients affected by Central Nervous System (CNS) malignancies. We provide a summary of the development, the initial applications, and the clinical lessons learned with their use. In addition we describe some of the future applications generated by these novel therapeutic concepts.
