Abstract
In an approach to detect mycotic infection early in leukemic patients 322 bone marrow specimens were collected from 187 children with leukemia for fungal cultures concomitantly with specimens for routine hematological examination. Fungi were isolated from seven patients. Histoplasma capsulatum was found in three, Cryptococcus neoformans in two, and Candida albicans in two of the patients. Six of the children were proven to have early systemic infection from these fungi and were successfully treated.
