Abstract

Calculations are presented which permit some insight to be made into laser viewing hazards. Equations relating to retinal irradiance (E//r) are only meaningful in the ″retinal hazard region,″ which extends from 400-1400 nm. Only wavelengths in this spectral region penetrate to the adult retina sufficiently to be of concern from a retinal hazard standpoint. This does not mean that other laser wavelengths are safe; it only means that they do not pose a threat to the retina.
