Abstract

Laparoscopic colectomy for cancer has been shown to be equivalent to open colectomy. Laparoscopic total mesorectal excision is feasible but remains investigational. Improvement in equipment and training for rectal dissection should result in similar outcomes to open operation for cancer in the future.
