Isolation of metabolically active capillaries from rat brain

Abstract

The results of this study indicate that it is possible to prepare a capillary fraction from rat brain which consists of small vessel segments on electron microscopy and is characterized by the activities of several marker enzymes. This preparation of brain capillaries is metabolically active and appears to constitute a functional unit of the blood brain barrier which is suitable for study in vitro.
