note = "Funding Information: On November 29 and 30, 1979, a sym posium was held at the Turner Au ditorium of The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions to mark Abe Lilienfeld's 60th year. Entitled {"}Chronic Disease Epidemiology at the Threshold of a New Decade,{"} this symposium was jointly sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health and The American Epidemiological Society. The speakers who participated in the program were selected from among Abe's former students (although, since all of us continue to learn from Abe, none of us can truly be called a {"}former{"} student) and from colleagues who have worked closely with him over the years. The three half-day sessions were devoted to the epidemiology of cancer, the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease and new meth-odologic and other issues in epidemiology.
