Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) among healthcare professionals is a critical challenge in today’s healthcare environments. The gap in time between the creation of evidence and the translation of that evidence into healthcare practice is well documented to be 17 years, which needs to be addressed. The World Health Organization proposed the Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice, which highlights the current state of IPC in healthcare education and practice and identifies successful strategies for collaborative teamwork. The active participation of all health professionals is needed to identify and resolve healthcare problems through a problem-solving approach to clinical decision-making that recognizes the contributions, roles, and responsibilities of all healthcare providers involved in that clinical care. Active participation requires that health professionals be involved in and committed to team building, improved communication processes, consideration of organizational context, active leadership, and careful management and planning of the translation.
