Immunological biomarkers of postpartum depression

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter reviews the current evidence concerning immunological biomarkers of postpartum depression (PPD). It offers a comprehensive overview of early research on immune dysregulation in PPD, which focused primarily on the cross-sectional studies of peripheral cytokines. It also offers a more detailed analysis of recent efforts to provide more sophisticated analyses of immune dysregulation, including longitudinal studies of within-woman changes; studies using summary inflammation variables; and studies connecting immune dysregulation to other systems (such as the HPA axis). While no single biomarker has been identified to date, the chapter concludes by reviewing promising future directions in the search for biomarkers.
