IgE-dependent histamine- releasing factor

A unique cytokine

Abstract

Numerous cytokines have been reported to influence basophil histamine re-lease. The IgE-dependent histamine-releasing factor (HRF), interleukin-3 and mononuclear cell chemotactic activating factor (MCAF) are among the direct agonists of basophil histamine release. Kinetic experiments distinguish these three agonists with only HRF paralleling AIgE-induced release. Furthermore, HRF differs from enhancers of release such as IL-3, IL-1 and stem cell factor. Agents which do not cause release include IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, G-CSF and ε-binding-protein. Thus, the IgE-dependent HRF appears to be a novel releasing cytokine.
