note = "Funding Information: During residency year at Hopkins, December 1968 was my vacation month. I was starting on the pediatrics faculty in July 1969, so I used that vacation time to write an NIH R01 application. Luckily, the grant was funded with a start date of December 1, 1969. This was the beginning of continuous R01 funding for my research, which does not end until 2020. I began my career on the faculty, separating a and b mRNAs to determine their concentrations in the thalassemia syndromes. We knew that b-chain synthesis is reduced in b thalassemia, whereas a-chain synthesis is decreased in a thalassemia, but we didn{\textquoteright}t know why. My research was moving along, but in 1970, three major events occurred to change its course.",
