T1 - Fifth Intenational Workshop on Chromosomes in Solid Tumors
AU - Trent, Jeffrey M.
N1 - Funding Information: The Fifth International Workshop on Chromosomes in Solid Tumors (Sth IWCST) was held in Tucson, Arizona, on January 10-12, 1993. Approximately 300 registrants from 15 different countries attended this workshop. As at previous IWCSTs, there was a mixture of plenary lectures and proffered oral presentations in addition to two poster sessions. This meeting marked the first time that a poster discussion session was held to allow presentation of selected abstracts. Highlights included the presentations by Drs. Francis Collins (The University of Michigan) on the search for the familial breast/ovarian cancer gene, and Janet Rowley (The University of Chicago) on translocations in malignancies. A total of 107 abstracts was submitted that ranged from studies of solid tumor karyology to molecular cytogenetic analyses, with a clear majority of the studies utilizing the technique of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Dr. Joe Gray (UCSF) chaired a Mini-Symposium entitled "Fluorescence in situ Hybridization Using DNA Probes" (sponsored by Imagenetics, Naperville, IL) which was extremely well received. This session, in particular, provided valuable information which so importantly combines classical cytogenetics with molecular biology. Immediately following the workshop, Oncor (Gaithersburg, MD) sponsored a wet laboratory session on fluorescence in situ hybridization using enumeration probes to tissue sections. Perhaps more than in any previous year, I owe a special debt of thanks to both Dr. Sydney Salmon, Director of the Arizona Cancer Center, and to Conference Coordinator Nancy Rzewuski for their outstanding support of the numerous administrative aspects of this Workshop. I also wish to acknowledge the dedicated staff of The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, especially Ms. Connie Lopatin. The support of the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, for the funding of a conference grant was also especially appreciated, as was the sponsorship of the Mini-Symposium by Imagenetics. I would also like to thank Dr. Avery A. Sandberg (Editor-in-Chief) of Cancer Genetics and Cytogenetics along with the fine staff at Elsevier Science Publishing Company for their willingness to publish the abstracts found in this issue. The IWCST's have served as a valuable conduit to disseminate new information related to cancer cytogenetics, and clearly the 5th IWCST continued to provide an avenue to report advances in this important area of cancer biology. Finally, this 5th IWCST marked the lOth anniversary of this meeting. With the continued interest in chromosomal alterations in neoplasia in general and solid tumors in specific, it appears reasonable to hold a 6th Workshop in early 1995.
