Abstract

To the Editor: Two articles in the August 5 issue provide an interesting contrast to each other. Discussing clinical policies and the quality of clinical practice, Dr. Eddy states, “The achievement of a consensus about a clinical recommendation is often interpreted as evidence that the recommendation is correct. Unfortunately, a consensus can be determined as much by the number of statements that advocate a certain position as by the quality of those statements.”A few pages later, regarding Bell's palsy, Dr. Adour states, “Although some surgically oriented physicians suggest that the benefit of medical therapy is still in doubt, prednisone.
