Abstract
The evolution of molecular targets for the treatment of psychosis is briefly summarized. Hypotheses regarding the effectiveness of medications for schizophrenia are also reviewed. While approaches that target dopamine receptors are still the sinequa-non of effective treatment, a considerable evolution has occurred with the introduction of atypical neuroleptics and, lately, of aripiprazole, in terms how how these drugs interact with dopamine receptors. Moreover, new approaches are appearing on the horizon that will target other receptor systems, especially glutamate transmission.
