The electronic ground state of low-spin planar bis[1-methyl-3-(2-chloro-6-methyl)phenyltriazine-1-oxide]cobalt(II) is derived from electron paramagnetic resonance spin Hamiltonian parameters obtained from single-crystal, powder, and solution measurements. The optical spectrum of this complex has also been assigned using a dyz ground state.
