Abstract

Intravenous administration of prostaglandin F to normal volunteers induced a three-fold increase in urinary cortisol output. Dexamethasone administration significantly inhibited the cortisol response, indicating that prostaglandin does not directly stimulate adrenal cortisol biosynthesis. Prostaglandin infusion appears to increase cortisol biosynthesis through stimulation of pituitary ACTH release.
