Experiments were performed on an in vitro stenosis model to determine whether stenosis geometry has an effect on the localization of patelet thrombus. The model was designed so that the wall shear stress differed substantially as a function of the flow direction For flow in the forward direction, thrombus was found in a region where the wall shear stress was between 150 and 300 dynes/cm2, but not in regions where the shear stress was much lower or much higher than this. For flow in the reverse direction, no thrombus was found No thrombus was found at or distal to the region of turbulent flow, but thrombus was eliminated when the turbulent portion of the model was eliminated. The results indicate that both hemodynamics and thrombus formation are sensitive to stenosis shape and that turbulence may contribute to shear induced thrombus formation.
