Abstract
In a previous study of experimental empyema thoracis in the guinea pig, we found that Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli empyemas developed proportionally to inoculated bacterial concentration and presence of hemothorax (1). Early death rate for E coli empyema (77%) was higher than that for S aureus empyema (17%). However, inoculation of Bacillus fragilis, even in the presence of hemothorax, did not produce empyema or early death. In this study, the effect of hemothorax on mixed aerobic-anaerobic empyema thoracis was determined.
