Abstract

The relatitie biological effectiveness (RBE) of pions compared to X rays on mouse skin was measured for one, two and five daily fractions. Normal mouse skin recovery between fractions was determined to be considerably reduced for pions as compared to X rays. The RBE of pions based on acute skin reaction scoring was estimated to be approximately 1.1, 1.3 and 1.45 for one, two and five daily fractions, respectively.
