Diffusion and Perfusion Imaging

Abstract

Perfusion MRI shows areas of low blood flow (hypoperfusion) that correspond to dysfunctional brain tissue that may not be structurally damaged. When combined with structural MRI it can reveal the entire regions of dysfunctional brain tissue that might account for specific language deficits in stroke patients. This article illustrates how various types of perfusion MRI, in combination with language testing, can help to identify neural regions that are crucial for (or activated during) specific language functions.
