N1 - Funding Information: In spring 1994, a volunteer work group from the emergency department of an inner-city academic medical center and a school of nursing was convened to brainstorm about how to increase our emergency department’s responsiveness to DV. The hospital protocol was minimal, and no training specific to domestic violence had been provided for staff. The group decided that its first act would be to apply for a program development grant to both solidify its goals and provide funding for training, reference materials, a research assistant, and patient education materials. The group applied to and received funding from the ENA Foundation. Funding Information: We now have created the necessary infrastructure to be responsive to DV with an updated protocol, policies and procedures, patient and professional educational materials, incorporation of screening questions and a body map on the nursing assessment form, and a new camera for documentation. We sustained our momentum despite construction, a computer crash, and other obstacles. For persons just beginning this process, helpful resources are the Family Violence Prevention Fund, a private, nonprofit advocacy and policy organization, and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which is funded by The Conrad Hilton Foundation and the Department of Health and Human Services to develop, evaluate, and disseminate a manual with multidisciplinary protocols and a training curriculum for health care settings.12 More information is available at their Web site at http://www.fvpf.org/health/.
