Abstract
Cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase (EC 3.1.4.17) activity was characterized in an extract of C. albicans. The enzyme showed a pH optimum at 7.5 and was not activated by imidazole or inhibited by theophylline or caffeine. Phosphodiesterase activity of Candida was stimulated by Ca++ and Mg++ and the apparent Km values for cAMP were 4.2 and 250 μM. The enzyme activity was increased during germination and dropped steadily during the pseudohyphal stage of morphogenesis.
