Abstract

The goals of counseling patients for family planning are: to help the patient understand the large body of sometimes conflicting medical data regarding serious side effects of any contraceptive method; to attempt to place in perspective the risk: benefit ratio for the patient for any method of contraception; and to choose with the patient the method of contraception that will provide the best combination of safety, efficacy, and peace of mind. It is only when the patient is confident and comfortable with her chosen method of contraception that she and her partner will be successful contraceptive users.
