Cost of Health Services in Sweden and England

Abstract

To the Editor: In my review of Odin Anderson's book, Health Care: Can there be equity?, published in the New England Journal of Medicine on November 29, 1973, I indicated that according to Dr. Anderson's figures, the central government in England had been able to gain better control, during the period 1950 to 1968, of the proportion of national income going to health services than had Sweden, with its decentralized government control. As evidence of this, I cited Dr. Anderson's own figures, which he presented in Table 21, “Total Costs of the Health Services as a Percent of National ….
