Abstract

Acute bronchitis is the cause of approximately 12 million physician visits annually. Approximately 5% of adults self-report symptoms consistent with acute bronchitis. The vast majority of these persons seek medical attention. Inappropriate antibiotic therapy for this predominantly viral infection is contributing to the growing problem of bacterial resistance.
