Chromium(VI) ions induce caspase-3-independent osteoblast cytotoxicity

Abstract

The cytotoxicity of chromium ions on human osteoblasts were tested in order to determine the involvement of apoptosis. Cells cultured on chamber slides were incubated with ions for 24 hours and treated with Hoechst stain to visualize the nucleus. Cr 3+ was found to have effect on the DNA synthesis rates whereas Cr 6+ decreased DNA synthesis rates in a dose dependent manner. It was also found that Cr 6+ ions induces dose-dependent osteoblast toxicity without activation of the caspase-3 enzyme.
