Chemistry of Alzheimer Disease

Abstract

Slow, inexorable loss of cognitive function(s) is of enormous social and medical concern. The most frequently identified form of this process is known as Alzheimer disease. In addition to the clinical loss of cognitive skills, Alzheimer disease is notable for atrophy of brain cortex as well as the characteristic accumulation of so-called neurofibrillary tangles and 'amyloid' plaques in brain tissue. The basis for these changes is unknown but most likely a combination of factors initiates common physiologic and biochemical pathways that ultimately lead to nerve cell dysfunction and death.
