Abstract

The comparison of cellular and cytokine profiles of periprosthetic membranes of cemented versus uncemented failed acetabular components are presented. Periprosthetic membranes are obtained from patients undergoing revision of their cemented or cementless acetabular component and characterized by abundant, diffusely distributed macrophages. That the response to loosened cemented and uncemented acetabular components demonstrated an overwhelming presence of macrophages, large numbers of fibroblasts, and high levels of cytokines, which are symptoms of chronic inflammation.
