Abstract
This paper presents differences in nuclear structure as observed by the Feulgen, Giemsa, toluidine blue and gallocyanin staining methods. The nuclear image properties were summarized by mathematical descriptors, which were calculated from cytophotometric data obtained by an automatic scanning procedure. Toluidine blue staining at pH 4.0 was best able to separate condensed from non condensed chromatin, and to demonstrate anisotropy in condensed chromatin.
