Abstract
A 64-year-old resident of a nursing home was entirely dependent on staff members for bathing, dressing, and transfers due to bilateral above-the-knee amputations. He had dense left hemiplegia as the result of a cortical stroke and had a long history of alcoholism. After purchasing a motorized wheelchair, he would leave the facility, purchase alcohol, and return to the facility intoxicated and exhibiting abusive behavior. The staff needed to make an ethical judgment concerning whether to curtail the resident's autonomy.
