Abstract
The beneficial effect of deep inspiration on airways mainly consists on the ability to reinstate airway caliber after induced bronchoconstriction. We have termed it "bronchodilatory effect of deep inspiration". The importance of this function derives from the observation that, in the absence of deep inspirations, airway response to spasmogen is greatly enhanced. On this basis, it is conceivable to hypothesize that the bronchodilatory effect of deep inspiration plays a role in modulating the occurrence of obstructive symptoms. Further studies are advocated to assess the role of pharmacologic interventions aiming at reinstating this respiratory system junction.
