Axoplasmic transport in experimental papilloedema

Abstract

The author discusses the disturbances of axoplasmic transport in experimental papilloedema. The author summarizes this study of experimental papilloedema produced by three different pathogenetic mechanisms: induced ocular hypotony secondary to cyclocryotherapy (studied with Dr. Donald S. Minckler), implantation of intracranial balloon (with Dr. Sohan S. Hayreh), and acute increase in the intraocular pressure. The pathological changes of each experimental model were examined by light and electron microscopy. The axoplasmic transport was investigated by autoradiography. The disturbance of vascular permeability in each model was examined with horseradish peroxidase as tracer.
