Abstract

This article covers the basic elements of the extrinsic and intrinsic innervation of the healthy mammalian respiratory tract. A general overview of the sensory, sympathetic, and parasympathetic innervation of the upper (nose) and lower respiratory tracts is covered. The control of breathing. per se is dealt with elsewhere in the encyclopedia, so it is not covered here.
