Abstract

The anisotropy (Δx) and asymmetry (δx) of the diamagnetic susceptibility of anthracene-d10 and its carbonium ion have been determined from quadrupolar 2H line splittings in high-field NMR spectra. The results show that Δx of ion and molecule are the same within experimental error. The influence of localized charges on the quadrupole coupling of the deuterons is discussed; in the olefinic part of the central ring of the ion this coupling differs drastically from the one in the molecule.
