Abstract
The indications for ablation of the socket are presented. The procedure is useful in the management of selected cases, either alone in anophthalmic orbits or combined with enucleation. Ablation of the socket should, in certain circumstances, be considered an alternative to orbital exenteration, particularly if the desired result is palliation (rather than an attempt at total excision) of neoplastic disease. The surgical technique is reviewed with illustrations. The technique is uncomplicated and easily performed by any ophthalmic surgeon.
