Abstract
The operational features of virtual laboratory developed in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Johns Hopkins in undergraduate unit operations laboratory course are discussed. The aim of this laboratory project is to enable students to experience wide range of design, scale-up problems, operating conditions and safety issues. An in-house tested batch distillation column simulation model is built where D/3 distributed control software permits display and control of any process communicating via analog or digital signal. The software modules are able to control pilot-scale distillation column which is used in chemical engineering unit operations laboratory.
