Abstract

A noninvasive test has been developed to distinguish variceal bleeding from bleeding due to gastritis or ulcer disease. The test is based on the ability of shed blood to lower the pO₂ of the gastric saline solution irrigant. It correctly predicted the site of bleeding in four of five patients with variceal hemorrhage and nine of nine patients with bleeding from gastritis or ulcers.
