Abstract
A double-blind randomised controlled trial of clofazimine was carried out on patients with Mycobacterium ulcerans infection. The drug alone without surgery was not an adequate treatment even of small non-ulcerated lesions. In patients treated surgically, clofazimine did not shorten the course of the disease nor reduce the number of operations required, nor produce smaller scars. Furthermore, it did not prevent recurrences, and M. ulceranscould still be cultured from lesions after several months of treatment. There is no place for clofazimine in the treatment of M. ulcerans infection.
