Abstract

1. 1. The β-crystallins from species representing the vertebrate classes Osteichthyes, Amphibia, Reptilia, and Aves have been isolated. 2. 2. Each of these species had two classes of β-crystallin (βH and βL) differing in molecular weight, but comprised in large part of identical polypeptides. 3. 3. Physico-chemical techniques were utilized to evaluate the structural similarity of the various purified β-crystallins to each other and to mammalian β-crystallins previously studied. 4. 4. Immunochemical data suggest that certain components of β-crystallin have been rigidly conserved during evolution while others have apparently evolved rapidly.
