N1 - Funding Information: The replication of RNA viruses requires an enzymatic mechanism for the synthesis of nucleic acid utilizing RNA as the template. It is assumed that this reaction occurs in a manner analogous to that of DNA-directed synthesis of RNA, as depicted above. An enzyme utilizing RNA as template and ribonucleoside triphosphates as substrates is not known to occur in uninfected animal, plant, or bacterial cells. Rather, this activity has been found only when cells are infected with RNA viruses, la-ll Partially purified enzymes have been obtained from several sources? TM The procedure described below yields a 2000-5000 fold purified Q# RNA polymerase with an activity of 4000-5000 millimicromoles GMP incorporated per milligram of protein per 20 minutes. Another procedure 1 This work was supported in part by grants from the National Institutes of Health (GM-I1301 and GM-11936), and the National Science Foundation (GB-5082). Dr. J. T.
